LEVANGER, Norway – A man in his 50s is presumed dead and another is hospitalized with burns following a farm building fire in Levanger, Norway, on Sunday, March 8, 2026. The blaze, which completely destroyed a barn, prompted a large emergency response and continues to be investigated.
Authorities were alerted to the fire in the Markabygda area of Levanger and quickly dispatched emergency crews, according to early reports. A man in his 60s was airlifted to St. Olavs Hospital for treatment of his injuries. The identity of both men have not been released.
“In connection with the fire, it quickly became clear that one person was unaccounted for and missing,” police stated. “That person is now considered presumed deceased in the fire.”
Firefighters gained control of the blaze and prevented it from spreading to nearby structures. As of 6:00 PM local time on Sunday, crews were working to cool the site to allow investigators access. Criminal technicians arrived on scene to begin their investigation.
“The barn is completely engulfed in flames, and the fire department is working to extinguish it,” operations leader Martin Eriksen Skjerve of the Trøndelag police district said around 12:30 PM on Sunday.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, but investigators are exploring all possibilities. The case highlights the dangers of rural fires and the challenges of emergency response in remote areas.
A separate, earlier fire occurred on December 26, 2024, in Levanger, where a residential home was severely damaged, and residents evacuated safely. Trønder-Avisa reported at the time that one person lived in the house, while four people resided on the farm overall. Police indicated that a possible cause of that fire was an older Christmas tree light near the entrance.
In a separate incident on July 20, 2025, multiple wildfires broke out across Trøndelag, including in Levanger, Grong, and Røros, prompting a full emergency response. According to Dagbladet, all available personnel were deployed, and the two available fire helicopters were utilized to combat the blazes.
