Lidl Considers Sunday Openings, Faces Resistance from Competitors and Unions

Lidl is exploring the possibility of opening its stores on Sundays, a move that is prompting pushback from both competitors and labor unions. The potential shift in operating hours comes as the discount supermarket chain seeks to gain an edge in the competitive Belgian retail market.

According to reports, Lidl has initiated discussions with unions regarding Sunday openings. Yet, the socialist union has already voiced its opposition to the proposal. Negotiations are currently underway to address concerns and potential implications for workers.

The move has too drawn criticism from established players in the Belgian supermarket sector. Colruyt and Aldi, two of Lidl’s main competitors, currently maintain their traditional Sunday closures.

Recently, Lidl published a price comparison highlighting its competitive pricing against Colruyt, Aldi, Albert Heijn, Delhaize, and Carrefour. The comparison indicated that Colruyt was 0.72% more expensive than Lidl, with even larger price differences observed for other chains – 5.76% for Aldi, 10.13% for Albert Heijn, 16.21% for Delhaize, and 17.15% for Carrefour. The company stated it has permanently reduced prices on over 100 products.

However, the accuracy of Lidl’s comparison has been challenged. Delhaize argued that the comparison was flawed, citing discrepancies in the timing of price data. “It’s not correct to compare prices from January 8 with today’s prices,” a Delhaize spokesperson stated. Colruyt also questioned the comparison, suggesting that Lidl temporarily reduced prices specifically to create a favorable comparison. “Our price archives show us that several prices at Lidl were reduced and the Colruyt prices were noted shortly afterwards,” the company said.

This latest development underscores the intensifying price war within the Belgian supermarket industry, as retailers vie for market share and customer loyalty. The decision by Lidl to consider Sunday openings and aggressively promote its pricing strategy signals a willingness to disrupt the status quo.
