A major infrastructure project is underway in Lima, Peru, promising to significantly reduce commute times between Carabayllo and Villa El Salvador to just 45 minutes. The Vía Expresa Grau, a 2.8-kilometer (approximately 1.7 miles) corridor, aims to integrate the city’s Metropolitano bus rapid transit system with Line 1 of the Lima Metro.

The Municipalidad Metropolitana de Lima (Lima Metropolitan Municipality) reported on the progress of the project on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, following a site inspection by Lima Mayor Renzo Reggiardo. The initiative seeks to improve connectivity through four stations and a technologically advanced traffic management system.

According to the municipality, the Abancay station is currently 90% complete, while the Andahuaylas station is 95% finished, with operate focused on installing metal structures in the boarding areas and vestibules. The concrete pavement along the 2.8-kilometer stretch between Plaza Grau and Junín Street has been completed, facilitating progress on the remaining stations.

Construction of a transfer station to connect the Metropolitano and Line 1 began in February 2026. This station, along with a pedestrian viaduct, will allow for seamless transfers between the two systems. The project is expected to reorganize traffic flow along one of Lima’s main urban axes.

The Vía Expresa Grau too includes provisions for green spaces, with 80% of landscaping completed along the Plaza Grau-Junín Street section. So far, 160 palm trees and 360 guaranguay trees have been planted, with plans to add vines and ground cover to enhance the surrounding environment. The ambitious project underscores the city’s commitment to improving public transportation infrastructure.

The new corridor will include stations at Abancay, Andahuaylas, Parinacochas/Huánuco, and the transfer station.
