Lindsey Vonn, the celebrated alpine ski racer, is embracing a latest mode of transportation as she recovers from a serious leg injury. The 41-year-old has traded her skis for an electric scooter, a change she documented in a recent Instagram video.
Vonn, a four-time overall World Cup champion and eight-time World Cup downhill champion, has been sidelined following a severe leg fracture sustained during a crash at the Olympic downhill race in Cortina d’Ampezzo on February 8, 2026. The injury was so severe that she revealed she narrowly avoided amputation thanks to urgent surgery.
“Got new wheels,” Vonn shared on social media, accompanying a video of herself navigating her home on the scooter. “Not going to be faster yet, but it’s better than a wheelchair.” She’s affectionately nicknamed her new ride “Speedy.”
The video shows Vonn skillfully maneuvering the scooter from the kitchen, past her wheelchair, and throughout her house. Her left knee and leg, as well as her right ankle, are supported by bracing.
Despite the ongoing recovery process – which she anticipates will accept approximately another year for her left leg to heal – Vonn has shown determination to stay active, with reports from DPA indicating she was engaged in light strength training over the weekend. She also suffered a fractured ankle on her right leg in the same fall, preventing her from putting weight on it.
Vonn previously tore the anterior cruciate ligament in her knee before the 2026 Winter Olympics, and doctors will only be able to address that injury after her leg has fully recovered. The incident has temporarily halted a remarkable career, but Vonn’s spirit remains undeterred as she focuses on rehabilitation and a return to the slopes.
