Just after noon on Tuesday, activity on Rua do Benformoso in Lisbon’s Mouraria neighborhood is still moving slowly. People are circulating, entering and exiting shops and cafes, largely members of the Bangladeshi community – both shop owners and customers – in a constant flow, though still far from the bustle that takes over the street each evening. Moving among them, as if in a parallel reality, are people struggling with drug addiction, bodies and minds exhausted and suspended until the next dose. Those supplying the drugs aren’t far away.
