Daily Life Disrupted for Hundreds of Thousands with Long COVID
Tens of thousands of people in the Netherlands continue to experience severe health issues months, and even years, after contracting COVID-19. Common symptoms include debilitating fatigue, shortness of breath, difficulty concentrating, and pain following physical exertion, significantly impacting their everyday lives.
The ongoing struggle with long-term COVID symptoms is a growing concern, highlighting the require for increased research and support for those affected. The lack of effective treatments and the uncertainty surrounding the condition contribute to the challenges faced by patients.
Personal Experience Fuels Call for More Research
Annelies Bos, a co-founder of the Long COVID Foundation, knows the challenges firsthand. She became ill in March 2020 and has not fully recovered. “I am exhausted all day and rest about 20 hours a day in bed,” she shared. Leveraging her medical background, Bos emphasizes the urgent need for more targeted research, advocating for collaboration between doctors, researchers, and patients to accelerate progress toward effective treatments.
Hope and Recognition with New Funding
On Friday, March 20, 2026, the Long COVID Foundation received a €1 million donation from Stichting Long COVID Quinty, offering a significant boost to research efforts. Ellen Bark, Director of the foundation, expressed gratitude for the support, stating, “This contribution not only provides financial resources but also recognition and hope for patients.” The funding is particularly important given the limited existing financial support for Long COVID research.
The donation, made possible by participants in the Postcode Loterij, is expected to accelerate crucial research into Long COVID. This collaborative effort underscores the power of collective action in addressing this complex and evolving health challenge.
