Indonesia’s Education Fund Management Agency (LPDP) has summoned AP, the husband of a recent graduate whose comments about preferring her children not to hold Indonesian citizenship went viral on social media. The agency is investigating allegations that AP has not fulfilled his obligation to contribute to Indonesia after completing his studies.

“LPDP is summoning Mr. AP to request clarification and initiate a process of action and sanctions, potentially including the repayment of the entire scholarship fund,” the agency stated Sunday, February 22, 2026.

“If it is proven that the obligation to contribute to Indonesia has not been met,” the statement continued.

LPDP affirmed its commitment to enforcing regulations fairly and maintaining the integrity of the institution.

“LPDP is committed to enforcing rules fairly, consistently and responsibly to all awardees and alumni, and to continuously maintaining the integrity of the institution in providing the greatest benefit to Indonesia,” the agency said.

LPDP regulations require all awardees and alumni to dedicate a period of service to Indonesia equivalent to twice the length of their studies plus one year. DS, who made the widely circulated comments stating “enough that I am WNI, my children don’t need to be,” completed her Master’s degree and graduated on August 31, 2017, and has already fulfilled her service obligation.

However, her husband, AP, is alleged to have not completed his required contribution period. The case underscores the LPDP’s expectations for recipients of its funding.

Viral Comments Spark Controversy

The initial attention to the matter stemmed from a video posted by a user with the Instagram handle @sasetyaningtyas. The video showed the opening of a package containing a letter from the UK Home Office.

The letter confirmed that the poster’s second child had been granted British citizenship, and a British passport arrived with the letter.

“This isn’t just any package. It contains a very vital document that will change the fate and future of my children. Let’s open it,” she said in the video.

“This is a letter from the UK Home Office, stating that my second child has been accepted as a British citizen,” she continued.

She then stated that she would work to ensure her children obtain foreign citizenship.

I know the world seems unfair, but enough that I am WNI, my children don’t need to be. We will strive for our children to have strong foreign passports,” she said.
