As the automotive industry pivots toward electric and hybrid technologies, the question of range remains a key concern for consumers. Now, the Lynk & Co 08, a collaborative vehicle from Geely and Volvo, is challenging conventional expectations. The Sino-Swedish crossover has been officially recognized by Guinness World Records for completing a significant distance solely on electric power, signaling potential advancements in hybrid vehicle efficiency and setting a new benchmark in the competitive European market. The record-breaking feat, verified by self-reliant experts in Mexico, demonstrates the vehicle’s capacity to operate as a fully electric vehicle for extended periods.
The Lynk & Co 08, a Sino-Swedish model also available in select European markets, has achieved a notable feat in electric vehicle technology. The premium crossover, a collaboration between Geely and Volvo, has been officially recognized by Guinness World Records after completing an impressive 293 kilometers (approximately 182 miles) solely on electric power. This performance effectively blurs the lines between hybrid and fully electric vehicles, setting a new benchmark for zero-emission mobility.
The record-breaking run took place over six hours at the Centro Dinamico Pegaso racetrack in Mexico. Under the strict supervision of independent experts and utilizing telemetry systems, the Lynk & Co 08 maintained a speed between 50 and 60 kilometers per hour (31-37 mph), simulating typical urban traffic conditions. The result was definitive: no gasoline was consumed during the entire distance, establishing the 4.8-meter (15.7 ft) model as a leader in its segment. This achievement comes as automakers globally race to extend the electric range of hybrid vehicles.
The success is underpinned by a 39.6 kWh battery pack – a capacity previously more commonly found in smaller electric vehicles. The front-wheel-drive version that set the record delivers a system output of 346 horsepower, while a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive variant boasting 585 horsepower is also available for performance enthusiasts. Although the official WLTP-certified range is around 200 kilometers (124 miles), the Mexico test demonstrated that, with efficient driving, the vehicle’s capabilities are significantly greater.
This record isn’t merely a marketing stunt, but a clear signal to European consumers, where the Lynk & Co 08 launched with a starting price of approximately €53,000. With DC fast-charging capabilities (10% to 80% in 33 minutes) and a three-speed Direct Hybrid Transmission (DHT), the model offers a level of flexibility that traditional internal combustion engine vehicles and earlier hybrid designs struggle to match.
Behind the wheel of the Lynk & Co 08, the future appears not only electric but also free from “range anxiety.” With a total combined range exceeding 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) in hybrid mode, and the ability to cover weekly city commutes on electric power alone, this crossover is poised to disrupt the automotive landscape in Europe.
