Signs are mounting that a hardware refresh for the Mac Studio is imminent, as current models face significant shipping delays and supply chain constraints. While Apple has not officially announced a new release, a combination of inventory anomalies and leaked specifications suggests the arrival of the M5-powered lineup is approaching.
Recent data from the Apple Online Store in Japan reveals a notable slowdown in the delivery of the M3 Ultra Mac Studio. Orders for the configuration featuring a 28-core CPU, 60-core GPU, 96GB of memory, and 1TB of storage are currently showing estimated delivery dates between April 14 and April 21, 2026. This two-to-three-week wait is unusually long for the current model, leading to widespread speculation that Apple is adjusting inventory in preparation for a product transition.
These shipping hurdles are compounded by a more severe crisis in high-end memory availability. Mac Studio configurations with 256GB of memory are seeing delivery windows pushed back by four to five months, a delay attributed to a deepening global DRAM shortage. Such supply chain volatility underscores the ongoing pressure on the semiconductor industry to meet the demands of high-performance computing.
The timing of these delays has fueled theories regarding a surprise launch. Some observers had pointed to April 1, 2026—the 50th anniversary of Apple’s founding—as a potential announcement window for M5 Ultra and M5 Max Mac Studio models. Yet, other industry reports, including those from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, suggest a broader release window in the first half of 2026, with a strong possibility of a mid-year debut.
Many analysts expect the new Mac Studio to potentially align with the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June 2026, following the precedent set by the M2 Max/Ultra release in June 2023. This timeline follows the debut of the M5 chip in the MacBook Pro in October 2025 and the subsequent launch of the M5 Pro and M5 Max in March 2026.
Leaked specifications indicate a significant leap in processing power. The M5 Max is expected to feature an 18-core CPU and a 40-core GPU with enhanced memory bandwidth.
