Maghnes Akliouche’s hopes of representing France at the 2026 FIFA World Cup appear increasingly slim, despite having earned three caps for Les Bleus. The AS Monaco midfielder, who was also eligible to play for Algeria, is now ineligible to switch allegiances due to FIFA regulations.

Akliouche has struggled to replicate his previous form for Monaco this season, registering 4 goals and 5 assists in 30 appearances across all competitions. His recent performances have drawn criticism from observers in France. “I wouldn’t include Akliouche in the France squad for the World Cup,” said Daniel Riolo on RMC Sport. “He’s almost 24 and needs to make the right club choice. He’s no longer catching my eye.”

Playing Officially for France After Age 21 Was Decisive

Akliouche made his official debut for France against Ukraine on September 5, 2025, at the age of 23 years, 6 months, and 11 days. That appearance effectively locked him into representing France, precluding any future switch to Algeria. According to La Gazette du Fennec, the age criterion was then surpassed.

FIFA allows players to change national teams under specific conditions. One requirement is being under 21 years ancient at the time of the last official match for the previous national team. Other stipulations include having played no more than three senior international matches, a three-year gap since the last appearance for the previous nation, and not having participated in the final phase of a major tournament with that team.

Akliouche Can Support Algeria, But Not Represent Them

Once a player exceeds the age of 21 while capped for a nation, the other conditions become irrelevant. Regardless of whether Akliouche played one, two, or three matches under Didier Deschamps, a change of nationality is no longer possible. He currently has 5 caps for France.

In December, videos circulated online showing Akliouche celebrating Algeria’s opening victory at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations against Sudan. He is free to support the Algerian national team as a fan, but is ineligible to play for El-Khadra.
