Lilongwe, Malawi – At least 13 people have died in Malawi following days of torrential rainfall and subsequent flooding, officials confirmed on Friday, March 20, 2026. The severe weather has impacted thousands of homes across the country, exacerbating existing vulnerabilities in a region frequently challenged by climate-related disasters.

Reports indicate the heavy rains began on Sunday and continued for several days, triggering both widespread flooding, and landslides. The affected areas include multiple districts, with initial assessments pointing to significant damage to infrastructure and agricultural land.

According to early reports, at least 35 people have been injured in addition to the fatalities. The scale of the devastation is still being determined as rescue and relief efforts continue.

The recent flooding underscores the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events in Southern Africa, a region particularly susceptible to the impacts of climate change. Malawi, a landlocked nation, is often hit by floods during the rainy season, which typically runs from November to April.

Authorities are working to provide assistance to those displaced by the floods, but access to some areas remains challenging due to damaged roads and infrastructure. The development could strain already limited resources and require international support to address the long-term needs of affected communities.
