Mali Withdraws Recognition of RASD, Backs Morocco’s Sahara Autonomy Plan
In a significant geopolitical pivot, Mali has officially withdrawn its recognition of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (RASD), shifting its diplomatic stance to support Morocco’s proposed autonomy plan for the Western Sahara. This move marks a substantial change in Mali’s foreign policy regarding the long-standing territorial dispute.
The decision was further detailed by Abdoulaye Diop, who spoke on the Malian government’s decision to revoke its recognition of the pseudo-state. According to reports, Mali has formally endorsed the autonomy plan, signaling a new chapter in its bilateral relations with Rabat. This shift is echoed by reports that Mali now supports the Moroccan initiative as the viable path forward for the region.
The diplomatic momentum in Morocco’s favor is extending across the continent. Kenya has also joined the ranks of nations supporting autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty, further isolating the claims of the RASD.
Beyond Africa, Morocco continues to strengthen its international partnerships. Foreign Minister Bourita recently praised the evolving dynamics of relations between Morocco and the Netherlands, suggesting a broader trend of diplomatic alignment.
These cumulative shifts underscore a growing international consensus favoring Morocco’s sovereignty and its proposed political solution for the Sahara.
