Lake in the Hills Man Convicted in 2020 Elgin Road Rage Murder

A Kane County jury yesterday found Dru K. Jarvis, 26, of Lake in the Hills, guilty of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and armed violence stemming from a 2020 shooting on a busy Elgin roadway.

Prosecutors stated the shooting occurred in the early morning hours of August 22, 2020, as Jarvis was a passenger in a white sedan traveling south on Route 31 (North State Street). Francisco Trujillo-Uscanga, 41, was a passenger in a light blue Mini Cooper driven by his coworker when the two vehicles became involved in an incident. After the coworker honked at Jarvis’ car when it attempted to merge into their lane, Jarvis allegedly opened fire, fatally wounding Trujillo-Uscanga, who died at AMITA Health St. Joseph Hospital. The driver of the Mini Cooper sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the legs but survived. This case highlights the increasing danger of road rage incidents nationwide, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Assistant State’s Attorney Mark Stajdohar emphasized the senselessness of the violence. “This tragic case is a stark reminder of how quickly anger behind the wheel can turn into irreversible violence,” Stajdohar said. “There was absolutely no reason for this shooting: someone honked a horn, and an innocent man lost his life.” Jarvis was previously convicted in a separate 2020 Elgin shooting and sentenced to four years in prison for aggravated discharge of a weapon; investigators say that case ultimately aided in connecting him to Trujillo-Uscanga’s murder. Jarvis is scheduled to appear in court on December 3 at the Kane County Judicial Center for motions and faces a minimum of 96 years in prison, with each murder-related charge carrying an additional 25 years to life due to prosecutors proving Jarvis personally discharged the firearm.
