Man Accidentally Discharges Gas Pistol During Easter Egg Hunt in Utrecht

A family-friendly Easter egg hunt in Utrecht turned into a scene of confusion on April 5, 2026, after a participant discovered a weapon in a public park and accidentally fired it. The incident, which occurred during a community event, highlighted the sudden danger that misplaced items in public spaces can pose to recreational activities.

The event took place in the Wilhelminapark, where sport instructor Robin van Empel of Steadi Training had organized an annual Easter search. Approximately 20 families gathered at 10:00 a.m. To search for eggs containing various tasks.

The festivities were interrupted roughly 15 to 20 minutes into the activity when a loud explosion echoed throughout the park. According to Van Empel, an adult participant had found a weapon instead of an Easter egg.

“He thought it was fake, made of plastic or glass or something. And he shot into the ground with it,” Van Empel said. “Then it turned out to be otherwise.”

Van Empel noted that the man was alone at the time of the discharge and confirmed that no children were in the immediate vicinity. Despite the shock, no injuries were reported. “People were a bit stunned,” the organizer added.

Local authorities arrived shortly after the report and cordoned off a section of the park to secure the area. After the man lost a shot, he provided his account of the events to the police and was subsequently permitted to rejoin the egg hunt.

Police investigators determined that the object was not a conventional firearm but a gas pistol. Officials explained that while these devices resemble real guns and produce a loud bang when the trigger is pulled, they do not contain traditional bullets and are frequently used as starting pistols for sporting events.

The search for eggs resumed shortly after the police intervention, though the cordoned-off area remained off-limits. Police have taken the weapon into custody to determine if it was registered, after which it will be destroyed. Witnesses described the moment as bedazed, with Van Empel calling the situation “bizarre” given the festive nature of the holiday.
