Marco Ruben Returns to Rosario Central, Eyes Libertadores with Di María

Marco Ruben is set for one final run. This time, definitively. He earned it. He wanted to play in the Copa Libertadores once more alongside his “partner” Ángel Di María for the club he loves. That opportunity slipped away in 2024, but he’s back and refreshed in 2026 to fulfill his dream.

His return – his fifth – began to take shape earlier this year when the veteran striker spoke with club officials and expressed his desire to rejoin the squad. He requested a few days to resolve personal matters and pledged to join training as soon as possible. Club directors immediately consulted with manager Jorge Almirón, who reportedly responded with an emphatic, “Bring him in immediately.” Central registered Ruben while awaiting confirmation.

With the manager’s approval and his personal affairs settled, Marco has decided to return to training and get into shape as quickly as possible to be available for selection.

Will he play in the derby?

The striker was already at the Arroyo Seco training ground on Saturday and began working with his new teammates. During his retirement (14 months since his last official match), Marco never stopped training. He intensified his preparations starting in January when he made the decision to return. Now, he will undergo a couple of weeks of adaptation to get in sync with the rest of the team. At 39 years ancient, and in “exceptional physical condition,” he may be on the bench for the Rosario derby, gradually building up his minutes.

Marco, the all-time leading scorer for the club with 106 goals in five different spells, will look to further cement his legacy. Now, with an Ángel by his side…can he do it?
