A prominent figure in Indonesian religious and child welfare circles has died. Margaret Aliyatul Maimunah, Chairwoman of the Executive Board of the Nahdlatul Ulama’s (NU) Fatayat (women’s wing) and a commissioner with the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI), passed away Sunday, March 1, 2026, at Fatmawati Hospital in Jakarta, according to reports circulating among Nahdliyin groups.
Muarofah, Chairwoman of the Kendal Branch of Fatayat NU, confirmed the news.
“Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un. Our sister, Hj. Margaret Aliyatul Maimunah, Chairwoman of KPAI and Chairwoman of the PP Fatayat NU, passed away at Fatmawati Hospital today, Sunday, March 1, 2026, at 8:25 AM,” she said.
The loss is being deeply felt within the Nahdlatul Ulama organization and the broader Indonesian community. Evanaimatul, Secretary of the Kendal Branch of Fatayat NU, described Maimunah as a dedicated and unwavering leader in the fight for the rights of women and children.
“We have lost a leader who was dedicated and militant. May she rest in peace, and may her deeds be accepted by God Almighty, and may all her sins be forgiven,” she said.
The Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) also announced Maimunah’s passing on its official Instagram account Sunday, writing, “Today we lost a leader, a mother, and a role model who meant so much to us at the Indonesian Child Protection Commission.”
KPAI highlighted Maimunah’s steadfast commitment to protecting children in Indonesia, stating that her dedication, care, and advice will continue to guide their efforts. “Mrs. Margaret Aliyatul Maimunah was not only a Chairwoman, but also a figure full of firmness, gentleness, and tireless dedication to the protection of Indonesian children. Thank you for the service and love you gave to the children of this nation,” the statement continued.
Margaret Aliyatul Maimunah Profile
Born in Jombang on May 11, 1978, Margaret Aliyatul Maimunah was the second daughter of KH Mohammad Faruq and Hj Lilik Chodijah Aziz Bisri.
She received her primary education within a pesantren (Islamic boarding school) environment, studying at Pondok Pesantren Denanyar Jombang from junior high through high school. After graduating from MAN Denanyar, she pursued a bachelor’s degree at IAIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya and completed her postgraduate studies at the University of Indonesia in Women’s Studies in 2009.
Maimunah was actively involved in student organizations from a young age, participating in OSIS, Pramuka, and various student activities. During her university years, she served as Chairwoman of the Kopri PMII (PMII Women’s Corps) Rayon Adab (2000–2001) and Chairwoman of the Komisariat PMII Adab Branch of South Surabaya (2001–2002).
Within IPPNU, she held the positions of General Secretary (2006–2009) and Chairwoman (2009–2012). Her organizational career continued at Fatayat NU as Coordinator of the Economic Division (2009–2015) and General Secretary (2015–2020), before being entrusted with leading as Chairwoman of the PP Fatayat NU.
Her commitment to women’s and children’s issues was also demonstrated through her role as a Commissioner of KPAI for the periods 2017–2022 and 2022–2027. She was also associated with the Women Research Institute (WRI), an organization focused on research and advocacy on women’s issues.
