A Welsh tourist is warning travelers to be aware of potential risks and hidden costs when visiting Morocco, following an experience that included a rough hot air balloon landing and persistent requests for money.

Ruben Chorlton-Owen, 24, shared details of his recent trip with his partner, including a hot air balloon ride over Marrakech that cost £170 per person. While the views were spectacular, the landing was jarring, with the basket hitting the ground three times before tilting, according to reports. Operators indicated such impacts are common depending on wind conditions, but Chorlton-Owen said he wishes the potential for a rough landing had been made clearer before the flight. Details of the popular hot air balloon experience can be found here.

Marrakech experience ends in panic

Beyond the hot air balloon incident, Chorlton-Owen cautioned visitors about aggressive sales tactics in tourist areas, specifically individuals offering services in the souks and then demanding large sums of money. He also pointed out the complexities of Moroccan currency regulations, which prevent travelers from obtaining dirhams in the United Kingdom and require keeping all bank receipts for reconversion at the end of the trip. He advised against using unofficial taxi apps with unlicensed drivers.

Marrakech: hot air ballooning is a must-do

Despite these issues, Chorlton-Owen said his trip wasn’t entirely negative, praising the friendliness and dedication of hotel staff. Morocco remains a popular destination, attracting 17.4 million international tourists in 2024 due to its cultural richness and affordability. Chorlton-Owen stated he would return to Morocco, but emphasized the importance of being informed about potential challenges to ensure a safe trip. The experience underscores the need for travelers to research local conditions and potential risks before embarking on international travel.
