Grobbendonk’s mayor, Marianne Verhaert, will undergo major surgery on Thursday, March 26, 2026, to address a complex neurological condition that has caused debilitating pain. The news comes as the Flemish Parliament member prepares for a potentially lengthy recovery and time away from her political duties.

Verhaert, who as well serves as a member of the Flemish Parliament, has been battling the illness for two years, describing it as an expanding ailment. She revealed the severity of her condition, and the upcoming surgery, publicly, stating that even strong pain medication, including morphine, often provides insufficient relief.

“It’s a disease picture that continues to expand in recent years, almost like an ink stain,” Verhaert explained. The pain is concentrated in her neck, shoulders, and head, and is described as burning and stabbing – worse than toothache.

Despite her ongoing health struggles, Verhaert continued to fulfill her responsibilities for an extended period. “I am someone who likes to keep going, but I ignored the signals from my body for too long,” she said. However, the frequency of debilitating episodes has increased, leading to the decision to proceed with the operation.

The surgery, focused on her cervical vertebrae, carries a 50/50 chance of success. “Maybe the pain will be gone. But maybe not,” Verhaert admitted, acknowledging the anxiety surrounding the procedure. Following the operation, she anticipates at least a month of rehabilitation.

Verhaert initially shared a hospital photo in late February, which prompted questions about her health. This led to her decision to openly discuss her condition. The case underscores the challenges faced by public figures balancing demanding roles with personal health battles.
