PENAJAM—Health officials in Penajam Paser Utara (PPU), Indonesia, are alerting residents to the potential for rapid spread of measles, a highly contagious disease primarily transmitted through the air.
According to Lukasiwan, director of RSUD Ratu Aji Putri Botung (RAPB), measles is caused by a virus with a high transmission rate.
In certain circumstances, a single infected individual can transmit the virus to numerous people nearby.
“Measles is a virus, so it spreads quickly. Transmission can also occur through the air. Theoretically, one person could infect many others, depending on the environment. For example, if You’ll see 20 people in a household, they could all become infected,” he said.
While officials are concerned about potential spread, Lukasiwan stated he does not yet have definitive data on the number of measles cases in PPU in recent months.
He noted that data collection is ongoing through the hospital’s information system.
“yet confirm the number of cases from January to now. We will check through the hospital’s information management system,” he said.
However, he indicated that cases are still occurring, citing the identification of children presenting with symptoms suggestive of the disease. This highlights the importance of ongoing surveillance and preventative measures.

Regarding preventative efforts, Lukasiwan emphasized that vaccine provision and administration fall under the authority of the local Health Department and primary healthcare facilities, such as public health centers (puskesmas).
“Vaccines, whether for measles, polio, or other diseases, are typically available at the Health Department and puskesmas. Preventative measures are primarily carried out there,” he explained.
