LEBAK – Health officials in Lebak Regency are facing a growing concern as suspected measles cases rose significantly in 2025, highlighting the ongoing challenges of infectious disease control and the importance of vaccination programs.

According to data from the Lebak Regency Health Office, there were 317 suspected cases of measles reported throughout 2025, a 23.8 percent increase compared to the 256 cases recorded in 2024. The Rangkasbitung district reported the highest number of cases. This increase underscores the potential for outbreaks when vaccination rates decline and population mobility remains high.

Currently, all reported cases remain “suspected” due to limitations in laboratory testing. Nining Tilawah, Head of the Prevention and Control of Diseases (P2P) at the Lebak Regency Health Office, explained that confirming diagnoses is hampered by a lack of available laboratory resources. “Currently, the cases are still in the suspected category. Laboratory tests cannot be carried out due to a shortage of reagents at BBLKM Jakarta,” she said on Friday, March 20, 2026.

The rise in cases is also linked to declining immunization coverage, a trend exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Reduced vaccination rates have weakened herd immunity within the community, increasing the risk of transmission. “There are still members of the public who refuse to have their children immunized, and combined with high population mobility, this increases the risk of transmission,” Tilawah added.

In response to the situation, the Lebak Regency Health Office is strengthening surveillance and epidemiological investigations to better understand the spread of the disease. Efforts are also underway to boost immunization rates, particularly among children.

Health officials are also focusing on public education, emphasizing the importance of recognizing early measles symptoms – including fever, cough, runny nose, and a red rash – and seeking prompt medical attention. Parents are urged to take their children to a healthcare facility immediately if these symptoms appear.

The Lebak Regency Health Office hopes that increased public awareness and improved health support will help to curb the spread of measles and protect the community.
