batampos – Health officials in Tanjungpinang, Riau Islands, are monitoring 26 suspected cases of measles reported since the beginning of 2026. The situation comes as Indonesia nationally reports over 10,000 suspected cases of measles and 45 outbreaks.
Eight samples from patients in Tanjungpinang have been sent to a laboratory for further testing to confirm whether the cases are positive for measles, according to Rustam, Head of the Tanjungpinang City Health Office.
“We have sent eight samples to the laboratory, and we are still awaiting the results to confirm whether they are positive or not,” Rustam said on Monday, March 16, 2026.
In 2025, the city recorded 10 confirmed cases of measles and two cases of rubella. This year has already seen a rise in suspected cases, with a total of 26 reports.
Despite the increase, the Health Office assures the public that the spread of the disease remains under control and within normal parameters.
Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that particularly affects young children, often beginning around 9 months of age. Ensuring children receive routine immunizations according to schedule, from infancy through school age, is a primary preventative measure.
“The most important thing is for parents to diligently immunize their children according to the schedule,” Rustam stated.
Beyond vaccination, maintaining a child’s immune system through solid nutrition is also crucial. Measles is transmitted through respiratory droplets, such as those produced by coughing or sneezing.
Symptoms to watch for include high fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes (conjunctivitis), and a red rash on the skin. Recognizing these symptoms early can support facilitate prompt medical attention and prevent further spread.
“A child’s nutrition or diet also greatly influences their immunity in preventing measles transmission,” Rustam concluded. This underscores the importance of a balanced diet in supporting overall health and resilience against infectious diseases.
