Brazil’s Mega da Virada lottery is generating significant year-end excitement, with an estimated prize of R$1 billion – the largest in the special contest’s history. Tickets have been available since November 1st and can be purchased until 8:00 PM on December 31st, the same day the draw will take place at 10:00 PM.

While many players rely on randomly selected numbers, some are turning to statistical analysis in an attempt to improve their odds. A common strategy is to review frequently drawn numbers from previous Mega da Virada contests, though past performance is not indicative of future results.

According to data from Caixa Econômica Federal, the number 10 has appeared most often in Mega da Virada history, drawn five times since the contest’s inception. Numbers 5 and 33 follow closely behind, having been selected in four previous editions.

Several other numbers also appear frequently among past results, creating a diverse range of frequently drawn digits over the years. However, Caixa emphasizes that each number has an equal probability of being selected, regardless of historical trends.

How to Enter the 2025 Mega da Virada

Players can purchase tickets through the Loterias Caixa app, the official Loterias Caixa website, authorized lottery retailers nationwide, or through internet banking for bank customers. Participants can select between six and 20 numbers from the available pool of 60, or opt for “Surpresinha,” a quick-pick option where the system automatically chooses the numbers.

Participation through group plays, or “bolões,” is also an option. Players can form a group directly on the ticket, and lottery retailers offer organized group plays with a service fee of up to 35% of the share value.

Cost of Entry and Winning Odds

A basic ticket with six numbers costs R$6, representing the most affordable entry point. As the number of selected numbers increases, the ticket price rises accordingly. A game with 20 numbers, for example, costs R$232,560.

The odds of winning vary depending on the number of numbers selected. With the minimum bet, the probability of matching all six numbers is approximately one in over 50 million, according to Caixa. Selecting 20 numbers improves the odds to one in 1,292.

Prize Distribution

Unlike regular Mega-Sena contests, the Mega da Virada does not accumulate. If no one matches all six numbers, the prize is distributed to those who correctly guess five numbers, and so on, ensuring the entire amount is awarded.

The prize pool is primarily funded by ticket sales from the contest itself, as well as accumulated funds from other Caixa drawings throughout the year.

Claiming Your Prize

The draw is held in São Paulo, with a live broadcast on Caixa’s official YouTube and Facebook channels. Following the draw, the winning numbers and prize distribution details are available on the Caixa website.

Prizes can be claimed at Caixa branches. Awards of R$10,000 or more are paid within two business days of presentation by the winner. A winning ticket or proof of purchase, along with photo identification and a CPF number, are required. Caixa recommends that winners sign the back of the ticket before leaving home. The claim period is 90 days; after that, the funds are transferred to Fies.

The anticipated R$1 billion prize surpasses all previous contests. The largest prize to date was R$635.4 million in 2024. Since then, the Mega da Virada has consistently broken records, solidifying its position as the most anticipated lottery draw on the Brazilian calendar.
