A lottery ticket purchased in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, won the grand prize of approximately $181.9 million in the Mega da Virada drawing held Thursday, January 1, officials announced. The Mega da Virada is one of Brazil’s most anticipated lotteries, known for its massive jackpot and New Year’s Day drawing.
The drawing was delayed from its originally scheduled date due to an unprecedented volume of ticket sales, according to Caixa Econômica Federal, the state-owned bank that runs the lottery. The bank reported 120,000 transactions per second on its digital platforms and 4,745 transactions per second at lottery retailers, necessitating the postponement to accommodate the surge in participation.
In addition to the jackpot winner, five other tickets matched the winning numbers, splitting a portion of the prize. Winning tickets were sold in João Pessoa (ParaÃba), Ponta Porã (Mato Grosso do Sul), and Franco Rocha (São Paulo). Additional winning locations were identified as online purchases, with Caixa providing further details later.
The winning numbers were:

A total of 3,921 tickets matched five numbers (quina), each receiving a prize of roughly $11,931.42. Another 308,315 tickets matched four numbers (quadra), with each receiving approximately $216.76. The 17th edition of the Mega da Virada generated over $3 billion in revenue, a 22.6% increase compared to the previous year.
How to claim your prize?
Prizes exceeding $2,428.80 can only be claimed at Caixa Econômica Federal agencies. Tickets are bearer instruments, and winners are advised to write their full name and CPF (Brazilian tax identification number) on the back of the winning ticket or receipt to register ownership.
In the case of a group purchase (bolão), each participant should do the same on their individual receipt. Winners should be aware of claim deadlines, as prizes expire after 90 days from the draw date, after which the funds are transferred to the Student Loan Financing Fund (FIES), as stipulated by Law 13.756/18.
