The Netherlands national team faces uncertainty regarding the availability of star striker Memphis Depay for upcoming friendly matches against Norway and Ecuador, as the forward is dealing with a thigh injury sustained although playing for Corinthians.

Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman expressed concerns about Depay’s condition following the injury picked up during Corinthians’ Serie A game against Flamengo on Sunday. “He might still join us, but it doesn’t look good,” Koeman stated. “We might bring him in later, perhaps for the second match. But if that’s not feasible, then there’s no need.”

Depay was already managing a knee injury prior to the latest setback, but was initially included in the squad for the March friendlies. The team is now awaiting the results of an MRI scan to determine the severity of the thigh injury, according to reports.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding Depay, Koeman has options in attack. Donyell Malen, currently playing for AS Roma, has been in excellent form, scoring 7 goals in his last 9 games. Koeman acknowledged Malen’s versatility, noting he can play effectively as both a striker and a right winger. “I already knew he was very good as a striker; that’s how he made his debut under me,” Koeman said. “He’s quick and a good finisher.”

Koeman confirmed he will not seek a replacement for Depay if he is unable to participate, stating, “I wouldn’t know who (to call up). The strikers on the list are well known. But they might not be as fit as I would like them to be.” Brian Brobbey and Wout Weghorst remain in contention for a spot in the squad.

Meanwhile, Crysencio Summerville, who plays for West Ham United, is being considered for a potential call-up. Koeman is impressed with Summerville’s performance in the Premier League and his ability to play on either wing. “I’m positive about Summerville,” Koeman noted. “Our biggest competition is at the back and in midfield; in attack, it’s a bit less so.”

Koeman previously stated that Memphis Depay remains his first-choice striker, emphasizing his importance to the team. The Netherlands will be looking to build momentum ahead of future competitions with these upcoming friendlies.
