Two confirmed cases of meningococcal meningitis have prompted a temporary closure and disinfection of a Milan office building belonging to Intesa Sanpaolo. A third potential case is currently under investigation.
The cases were identified within Intesa Sanpaolo’s “Torre Gioia 22” building, located on Via Melchiorre Gioia in Milan. Following the diagnoses, building management initiated a thorough disinfection process. Company leadership has decided to close the office to staff until Sunday, March 29, 2026, to allow for the cleaning and to facilitate contact tracing.
Health authorities have been notified and are working to identify individuals who may have had close contact with the infected employees. Those identified will be offered preventative antibiotic treatment. The local health authority (Ats di Milano) has activated its standard epidemiological procedures for these types of situations and is advising employees to be vigilant for symptoms of the disease.
Meningococcal meningitis is a serious bacterial infection that can cause inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for preventing severe complications. This situation highlights the importance of ongoing public health surveillance and rapid response to infectious disease outbreaks.
