Minas Gerais Intensifies Meningitis Combat Efforts with Professional Training in Montes Claros

To strengthen the regional response to bacterial infections, the Minas Gerais State Department of Health (SES-MG) convened a specialized workshop in Montes Claros to update health professionals on the prevention and treatment of meningitis. This initiative by the Secretaria de Estado de Saúde de Minas Gerais aims to ensure that frontline providers are equipped with the latest clinical protocols to identify and manage the disease more effectively.

The training comes at a critical time as epidemiological data indicates that meningitis cases in the state have returned to levels seen before the COVID-19 pandemic. According to SES-MG records, 2024 saw 1,013 notifications—the highest number recorded since 2019. For comparison, there were 983 cases in 2023 and 1,019 occurrences in 2018. More recent data shows that between January and July of the current tracking period, 497 people were already infected.

Public health officials have expressed particular concern regarding Meningitis C. In 2024, the state registered 53 cases of meningococcal disease, followed by 46 cases reported through 2025. The urgency of the situation was highlighted by a recent cluster of infections in Extrema, where three children were infected and two subsequently died. An additional case was also reported in Itapeva, prompting intensified surveillance by epidemiological teams.

Medical experts emphasize that widespread vaccination remains the most essential tool for preventing these severe infections. The recent surge in cases underscores the ongoing public health challenge of maintaining high immunization coverage to prevent avoidable fatalities.

This educational push in Montes Claros is part of a broader strategy by the state government to expand healthcare access and quality. This includes initiatives like the “Carreta Saúde Mais Perto” project, launched on March 20, 2026, which aims to bring essential consultations and exams directly to various regions of Minas Gerais. Improving the readiness of healthcare providers is a vital component of this strategy, as early detection and rapid treatment are critical for reducing mortality rates in rapidly progressing meningitis cases.
