The transition to menopause isn’t always marked by hot flashes, and a range of other symptoms can signal this life stage for women. Understanding these less-discussed changes is crucial for women’s health, as the perimenopause and menopause phases affect millions.

Perimenopause, the period leading up to menopause, is characterized by fluctuating hormone levels. This hormonal shift can trigger both physical and mental health challenges. As a woman enters perimenopause, the body’s ability to mature and release eggs diminishes, leading to less frequent ovulation and reduced production of progesterone. Eventually, estrogen levels also decline, resulting in the cessation of menstruation.

The process is often described as an “inverse puberty,” reflecting the significant hormonal changes occurring within the body. Currently, approximately 1.7 million women in the Netherlands are experiencing the menopausal transition.

It’s important to distinguish between the terms “menopause” and “perimenopause,” as they are often used interchangeably. Menopause is specifically defined as the moment of a woman’s last menstrual period – a point that can only be determined retrospectively. A woman is considered to have reached menopause once she has not had a period for a full year.

The duration of the transition varies significantly from person to person. Recognizing the signs of perimenopause and menopause allows women to proactively manage their health and well-being during this significant life phase.
