After nearly 13 years in development following its initial announcement in August 2013, Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel’s unique genetic mutation cat-breeding roguelike, Mewgenics, recently launched to critical acclaim and strong sales. The game, which blends feline breeding with tactical, XCOM-style combat, is already exceeding expectations, and McMillen is now considering plans for downloadable content (DLC).
The possibility of DLC was revealed during an “Ask Me Anything” (AMA) session with Edmund McMillen on February 11, 2026. McMillen stated he anticipates beginning development on DLC in the coming months, but wants to first understand which aspects of the game players are enjoying the most. He estimates the development and release cycle for any DLC would take around a year, “probably.”
While specific details regarding the DLC remain unknown, McMillen has a history of projects exceeding their initial scope. He previously stated in 2018 that “Mewgenics” could be completed within one to two years. This pattern suggests a longer development timeframe is likely. The game’s success is already evident in its rapidly growing player base and sales figures.
The game has quickly gained traction, with peak concurrent players reaching 83,956 – significantly surpassing the peak for McMillen’s acclaimed title, “The Binding of Isaac.” Within just 12 hours of release, Mewgenics exceeded 250,000 units sold and recouped its development costs within three hours of launch.

“Mewgenics” combines a cat-breeding simulator – where players evolve lineages through genetic manipulation – with turn-based tactical gameplay reminiscent of XCOM, where teams venture outside to strengthen their feline squads. The game boasts over 200 hours of gameplay, numerous playable classes, more than 50 abilities, over 800 items, customizable home upgrades including magical furniture, more than 200 enemies and bosses, and unique NPCs with quests – all with a signature McMillen twist, including a focus on… well, cat waste.
Mew has more concurrent players than Isaac’s peak now. Crazy. More today than yesterday

Mewgenics
■ The ultimate turn-based tactical & breeding roguelite featuring cats
From Edmund McMillen (The Binding of Isaac, Super Meat Boy) and Tyler Glaiel (Closure, The End Is Nigh) comes a legacy roguelite with deep tactical gameplay. The question is:
What if you could breed the perfect whisker warrior, build an army of them, and send them on a strategic adventure to find money, food, and vast treasures?
■ Cats in an endless loop
Welcome to Boonetown. Form a team of ever-growing cats, equip them with collars divided into numerous classes – fighter, tank, mage, and more – and send your mutant cat squad on a turn-based battle adventure requiring careful positioning, wild power combos, and strategic use of the environment!
■ Battles with huge rewards
With over 1,000 unique abilities (75 per class), more than 900 items, and countless environmental interaction elements, a new strategic challenge awaits each time you play. This depth offers endless possibilities for both experimentalists and efficiency experts.
■ Breeding creates the future
Cats return from battle bearing scars and experience (and sometimes new heads!). Inherit strange skills and mutations to the next generation, tinker with lineages, and control genetic variations to breed even stranger and more powerful cats for your next adventure.
■ Epic scale
- A main campaign mode boasting over 200 hours of volume
- More than 10 character classes and 75 unique abilities per class
- Over 900 wild items
- More than 200 enemies and bosses
- Roguelite game progression: always a different game experience.
- Constant turn-by-turn choices. Money! Items!! Genes!! They are all important elements.
■ Simple yet endlessly complex
“Mewgenics” welcomes you to play and will reveal new facets over time. After learning the basics in your first playthrough, you’ll face decisions like optimizing breeding chains, discovering unexpected ability combos, and the agonizing choice of whether to keep cute kittens or sell them to NPCs for home upgrades. By embracing the chaos and innovative gameplay, “Mewgenics” will show you the path to becoming a tactical master.
Create, test, and adapt! There’s always a new way to try (and break) this game.
And, by the way, the cats can be petted.
