Violence flared across the Mexican state of Sinaloa over the weekend, culminating in the gruesome deaths of a couple in Villa Unión and a carnitas vendor in culiacán, bringing the total confirmed homicides to at least eight. The couple was killed in a targeted attack involving gunfire and a subsequent arson, with authorities discovering evidence of explosive devices, signaling a worrying escalation in cartel activity [[2]]. These incidents underscore the ongoing security challenges in a region known for both it’s cultural richness and the presence of powerful drug organizations [[1]].
A couple died in a shooting and subsequent fire at a home in Villa Unión, a town south of Mazatlán in the Mexican state of Sinaloa, authorities reported. The incident is part of a weekend that saw at least eight people killed across the state, raising concerns about ongoing violence.
According to neighbors, gunfire erupted in the early morning hours of Sunday, December 6, with intermittent bursts of heavy caliber weapons and explosions continuing for several hours. The armed group repeatedly fired upon the residence, located in the Sixto Osuna neighborhood, and, unable to force the occupants out, set the house ablaze.
Emergency responders arrived Sunday morning to find the home completely destroyed by gunfire and explosions, some of which witnesses described as homemade bombs. Inside, they discovered the bodies of Vicente “N” and Daniela “N.” Initial reports indicate the man worked as a contractor in the region’s agricultural fields.
Authorities also found unexploded explosive devices at the scene, which were removed by personnel from the Secretary of National Defense. The discovery suggests a deliberate escalation of violence beyond a simple shooting.
Another attack in Culiacán
In a separate incident Sunday, a man was fatally shot while working at a carnitas stand in Culiacán’s Lomas Verdes neighborhood. Witnesses said armed assailants approached the stand and opened fire on Wenceslao “N,” 48, the establishment’s owner, killing him.
Sinaloa sees eight homicides over weekend
The deaths of the couple and the man in Culiacán bring the weekend’s homicide total to eight. On Saturday, December 5, state prosecutors recorded five additional deaths.
Those killings occurred in various locations throughout Culiacán, including the Pemex, Ampliación Buenos Aires, and Antonio Toledo Corro neighborhoods, as well as the town of Mezquitita in the Imala district. Another death was reported at a Culiacán hospital, stemming from a shooting that occurred November 24 in the Gabriel Leyva neighborhood. A further victim was found on a highway near San Ignacio, south of the state capital.
