An active shooter situation unfolded Thursday, March 12, 2026, at Temple Israel synagogue in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan, a community with both a place of worship and a school on site. The incident has prompted a heightened sense of alert among Jewish communities both domestically, and internationally.
According to Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard, security personnel at the synagogue engaged the suspect immediately upon his arrival. “As the suspect approached the synagogue, security guards observed him and began to fire,” Bouchard told reporters at the scene, as reported by CNN.
A security guard was struck by the suspect’s vehicle but did not sustain serious injuries. The suspect was later found deceased inside the car.
Authorities confirmed the suspect was armed with a rifle and that a shooting occurred. The circumstances surrounding the suspect’s death remain under investigation.

Possible Explosives Found
The situation is now under control, though the full sequence of events is still being investigated. Authorities have not yet determined the exact cause of the suspect’s death, whether it resulted from injuries sustained during the incident, was the result of being shot by security personnel, a self-inflicted wound, or from a fire that ignited inside the vehicle.
“Something ignited inside the car,” Sheriff Bouchard stated.
Police indicated that items potentially containing explosives were discovered within the vehicle.

The incident comes amid increased vigilance around synagogues following the start of attacks by Israel and the United States against Iran.
Simultaneously with the attack in Michigan, police deployed significant resources to a situation at a synagogue in Trondheim, Norway.
Authorities Urge Public to Avoid Area
“We request the public to avoid the area and allow police to work,” Michigan authorities said. “Increased patrols will also be conducted at other religious gathering places in the district.”
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer also addressed the shooting.
“This is heartbreaking. The Jewish population in Michigan should be able to live and practice their faith in peace,” Whitmer wrote in a statement posted to X.

FBI Director Kash Patel wrote on X that FBI personnel are on the scene.
There has been a rise in attacks targeting members of the Jewish community in the United States, leading Jewish institutions such as synagogues and schools to implement stricter security measures, CNN reports.
