Mexico City – Senator Ignacio Mier, leader of the Morena party’s Senate caucus, stated on February 18, 2026, that any final proposal for electoral reform must align with the principles of the “Fourth Transformation,” or 4T. The statement comes as negotiations surrounding changes to Mexico’s electoral system remain unresolved, and underscores the importance of the 4T ideology to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s administration.

Mier indicated that Morena is prepared to move forward with the reforms even without the support of its allies, the Partido del Trabajo (PT) and the Partido Verde Ecologista de México (PVEM). The initial proposal, presented in February 2024, was temporarily paused due to disagreements within the governing coalition. This development highlights Morena’s determination to pursue its agenda, even if it means acting independently.

The senator emphasized his party’s commitment to austerity in electoral processes, while also asserting that these efforts would not weaken the National Electoral Institute (INE). He maintained that the intention is to strengthen the INE’s autonomy and independence, as well as to ensure a balance of power and the sovereignty of states in electoral matters. The move underscores the ongoing debate over the future of Mexico’s electoral system and the influence of the 4T on political decision-making.
