A frustrated Mirra Andreeva suffered a stunning defeat on Monday at Indian Wells, falling to Katerina Siniakova 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3 in the Round of 32. The loss raises questions about the 18-year-vintage’s form nearly a year after a breakthrough stretch that saw her win titles in Dubai and Indian Wells.
Andreeva’s match against Siniakova was marked by visible frustration, culminating in a code violation for throwing her racket after losing the second set tiebreaker, and again after match point. Following the defeat, Andreeva reportedly screamed “F–k you all” repeatedly to the crowd, some of whom responded with boos.
The defending Indian Wells champion initially showed resilience, battling back from a 0-3 deficit to claim the first set 6-4. However, the match spiraled as Siniakova, a world No. 1 in doubles, proved a difficult opponent. Andreeva earned 26 break points but converted only seven, and committed twice as many unforced errors as winners.
When asked about the outburst, Andreeva explained that her anger was directed at herself as well as others. “It was to myself, to everyone, basically,” she said. “I signify, after the loss, I just get very angry, so I say those things sometimes to myself. I mean, first to myself, of course, but then, yeah, it was just anger coming out, just a lot of emotions. Not really towards anyone.”
