According to the State Health Department (SES/SC), the suspected cases have all been identified within the Greater Florianópolis region, specifically in the cities of Biguaçu, Florianópolis, Santo Amaro da Imperatriz, and Palhoça.

Between 2022 and December 2025, Santa Catarina recorded a total of 598 confirmed cases of Mpox across 33 municipalities. Tragically, one death linked to the virus was reported in December 2022, involving a patient with a compromised immune system.

State Preparedness Measures

The State Health Department’s Directorate of Epidemiological Surveillance (DIVE) is actively monitoring for potential cases throughout the territory. Mpox is a nationally notifiable disease, meaning all suspected cases must be immediately reported for investigation and contact tracing to prevent further transmission.

“There is an established surveillance system and a Contingency Plan for Mpox in the State,” the SES/SC stated. “the disease continues to be monitored for potential imported cases and changes in the disease profile.” This proactive approach is crucial for managing potential outbreaks and protecting public health.

How Mpox Spreads

Transmission of Mpox occurs through close contact with skin lesions, body fluids, or contaminated materials such as clothing and bedding. Person-to-person spread is also possible, particularly through prolonged physical contact or respiratory droplets, while the latter is less common. Transmission ends once the scabs from the lesions have disappeared.

Symptoms of Mpox

The incubation period for the disease is around 6 to 13 days, but can range from 5 to 21 days. Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, low energy, and swollen lymph nodes, followed or accompanied by the development of a rash.

The rash typically begins on the face and spreads to other parts of the body, including the hands, feet, genitals, and mucous membranes.

Recommendations

  • If you experience a sudden onset of lesions on mucous membranes and/or an acute skin rash (blisters, pustules) anywhere on the body, seek immediate medical attention;
  • Avoid close physical contact with individuals who have suspected skin or mucous membrane lesions;
  • Practice good hand hygiene with soap and water and/or hand sanitizer;
  • Individuals with suspected or confirmed Mpox should isolate themselves and strictly follow medical guidance to prevent virus transmission.
