Nasal Spray Protects Against Flu in Studies | Leiden Research

A twice-daily nasal spray containing a broadly neutralizing antibody may offer protection against influenza during the winter months, according to new research. A Dutch research group demonstrated the effectiveness of the spray in mice and macaques, and its safety in a clinical study involving humans. The results were published in Science Translational Medicine (DOI: 10.1126/scitranslmed.adz1580).

Researchers at Johnson & Johnson initially identified antibodies with broad neutralizing effects against influenza A and B viruses back in 2012. However, early animal studies showed that intravenous administration failed to reliably protect mice from infection. This led the company to lose interest in further clinical development of the antibody.
