Beijing – A nationwide effort to streamline medical image sharing has reached a significant milestone, with over 349 million medical imaging indexes now uploaded to a national platform, officials announced on Wednesday, March 12, 2026. The initiative aims to resolve long-standing issues of redundant and costly medical testing for patients.

The National Healthcare Security Administration has been building a national medical imaging cloud since 2024, establishing standardized data indexing, and coding. This allows for the rapid retrieval of patient imaging data across provincial boundaries, addressing a key frustration for individuals navigating the healthcare system. According to reports, patients have long complained about the need for repeated tests when seeking care in different locations.

As of March 12, 2026, all 31 provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities, and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps have uploaded medical imaging indexes from at least one location within their jurisdiction. The cumulative total of 349 million indexes represents a substantial data foundation for cross-provincial image access. Southern Net reports that this development is expected to significantly improve convenience for patients.

The National Healthcare Security Administration plans to continue refining the medical imaging cloud service, focusing on data quality control and expanding cross-provincial access. This move underscores the government’s commitment to improving healthcare efficiency and patient experience. Officials anticipate that wider data sharing will provide tangible benefits to those covered by medical insurance, offering more accessible and effective care.

The initiative is expected to reduce unnecessary medical expenses and improve the overall quality of healthcare services. China News detailed the progress, noting the widespread participation from across the country.

Further optimization of the system and enhanced data management are planned to ensure the long-term success of the program. Tencent News highlighted the administration’s dedication to safeguarding the health and well-being of the population through this innovative approach.
