Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dispelled rumors of his death with a video released Sunday, responding to claims circulating on social media that he was killed in an Iranian attack. The emergence of these reports comes as Iran has publicly stated its intention to pursue and assassinate Netanyahu.
The false reports of Netanyahu’s death gained traction following a press conference on Thursday, his most recent public appearance. Some online speculated the footage from the press conference was artificially generated, citing an alleged anomaly – six fingers on Netanyahu’s hand – as evidence.
Tools like Grok had previously indicated the original conference video may have been altered with artificial intelligence, adding to the speculation. Netanyahu addressed the theories directly in the new video, demonstrating he has five fingers while ordering a coffee. “Do you seek to count the number of fingers?” he quipped.
Netanyahu also joked about the reports of his demise. “What did you ask? Oh, what they’re saying on social media, that I’m dead? Look, I’m dying for a coffee. And you realize what? I’m also dying for my people; the way they are behaving is simply fantastic,” he said in the video.
Despite the video, Netanyahu remains a target for Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, which reiterated its threat to hunt and kill him on Sunday. “We will continue to pursue relentlessly and kill the criminal Zionist prime minister, if he remains alive,” the Guard stated.
Reports regarding the condition of Iran’s new leader, Mojtaba Jamenei, also surfaced. Iranian state television referred to him as “janbaz,” a Persian term meaning wounded in combat, in an attempt to dispel rumors about his well-being. No details were provided regarding the severity of his injuries or where the attack occurred, though a Kuwaiti newspaper reported he was transported to Russia for treatment.
