Los Angeles – Netflix is removing the original 1997 film I Know What You Did Last Summer from its streaming platform, effective March 1, 2026. While the 2025 sequel will remain available for the time being, fans will soon have to look elsewhere to revisit the iconic ’90s slasher.

The 1997 film, starring Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe and Freddie Prinze Jr., follows four teenagers haunted and brutally stalked by a fisherman wielding a hook, a year after they covered up a fatal hit-and-run accident.

I Know What You Did Last Summer quickly became a defining film of the ’90s teen slasher genre, achieving a lasting cult status among horror fans. The film represents a key era in teen horror, alongside titles that continue to resonate with audiences today.

The film boasted all the elements needed for a cultural hit, from a trendy cast comprised of rising stars from popular television shows to a suspenseful script penned by Kevin Williamson of Scream fame.

Its shocking scenes, gloomy coastal setting, and fitting musical score perfectly encapsulated the slasher aesthetic of the 1990s.

Despite receiving a 47% rating from critics and a 41% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, the film remains a solid and entertaining entry in the genre, and a perfect time capsule of ’90s horror.

The removal of the original film doesn’t diminish its impact, and fans can still enjoy the 2025 installment currently available on the streaming service.
