Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) launched a trial direct rail link between Neuchâtel and Le Châble on Sunday, March 1, aimed at streamlining access to the Verbier ski resort. The new service eliminates two train changes previously required for skiers traveling from Neuchâtel, a move that could become permanent as early as next season if the pilot proves successful.
Ski enthusiasts from Neuchâtel can now reach the slopes of Verbier via a single train ride. SBB is testing the direct connection to Le Châble for the first time this winter, departing Neuchâtel station at 07:12 and arriving at Le Châble at 09:41. The initiative reflects a broader trend of transportation providers adapting services to meet specific customer needs.
This special operation will run only once this winter. However, SBB spokesperson Jean-Philippe Schmidt indicated the project could be renewed on a more regular basis starting next season if the trial is well-received. “We have schedules with trains running almost every day, the same thing from Monday to Sunday. And the idea now is to say: ‘From Monday to Saturday, we have a certain number of trains that handle commuter traffic, people who work (…) and we are seeing more and more demand for a slightly more specific offer, an offer that we are trying to adapt precisely to the needs of Sunday,’” Schmidt explained on Friday.
Proven Successes
The new route builds on the success of similar direct services already operating from Geneva and Fribourg to Le Châble for several years. These existing routes aim to simplify travel for skiers by allowing them to arrive at the base of the slopes without the hassle of changing trains with their equipment.
“It’s true that we need more people to find it really pleasant to secure on the train with their equipment, to get off right at the foot of the slopes and then avoid, especially on the way back, traffic jams on the road,” Schmidt added. The move underscores SBB’s commitment to improving the overall ski tourism experience.
SBB plans to continue testing new offerings throughout the year, with the goal of making them permanent features. The Verbier Express, which connects Geneva to the Valais mountains during the winter, will also operate for the first time during the summer.
