New Cultural Channel Coming to Spanish Digital Television

Spain’s public broadcaster, RTVE, is launching a new cultural channel, “ARTE España,” in late June, in a move that promises to shake up the country’s digital television landscape. The channel is a collaboration with European arts broadcaster ARTE and will focus on a range of artistic disciplines, from classical music to theater.

The project, spearheaded by journalist Ana Peláez within RTVE’s new Arts and Knowledge area, is timed to coincide with a key reorganization of the television sector and the awarding of new national licenses. This launch comes as RTVE closes 2025 with a positive operating result of 55 million euros, allowing the corporation to align with successful models in France and Germany by offering a dedicated space for arts programming.

“ARTE España” will feature music, opera, and theater, and will even revive classic formats like “Estudio 1” for a new generation of viewers. The programming will be built around five core pillars focused on educational excellence. The channel aims to fill a gap in the market for high-quality arts content often overlooked by mainstream broadcasters.

According to La Razón, RTVE is utilizing a financial surplus to build this ambitious project a reality. The move underscores a growing trend of public broadcasters investing in cultural programming to serve a broader range of audience interests.

The new channel will as well include cinema, documentaries, and Spanish performing arts. Confidencial Digital reports that RTVE hopes to become the Spanish partner within this European project, strengthening its international presence.

For viewers looking for additional content, RTVE also offers a wide range of series, movies, and programs on its streaming platform, RTVE Play, including popular titles like “MasterChef” and “La Promesa.”
