New Harry Potter Series: First Look & Cast Revealed – HBO Max

Fans are getting a first look at the new generation of Hogwarts students. HBO unveiled a striking first image from the highly anticipated Harry Potter series on its Instagram account, as did the franchise’s official page, on Tuesday, March 24.

The photo is accompanied by a single word: “tomorrow,” paired with a small lightning bolt emoji referencing the hero’s iconic scar. This minimalist caption hints at a reveal coming on Wednesday, March 25. Will a trailer finally be released? Or perhaps a teaser? The mystery remains.

The initial glimpse of the event series shows Harry, seen from behind (Dominic McLaughlin takes on the titular role), walking towards the Quidditch pitch on a wintry day at Hogwarts. He’s sporting a red and gold robe, the colors of Gryffindor house, with the number 7 and the name “Potter” visible on the right side. Numerous students await entry to the sports grounds, adorned with the crests of Gryffindor and Hufflepuff.

Mara LePere-Schloop, the production designer and art director known for her work on series like Interview with the Vampire and Pachinko, has been instrumental in creating this new look for Hogwarts… one that appears remarkably faithful to the aesthetic of the original films.

A Series with Major Ambition

The Harry Potter series is currently in production at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the United Kingdom. This new adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s saga, aiming to be the most comprehensive yet, is being spearheaded by showrunner Francesca Gardiner, a writer on His Dark Materials and The Man in the High Castle, and director Mark Mylod, best known for his work on Game of Thrones. The score will be composed by the celebrated Hans Zimmer.

Much of the cast has already been announced. Alastair Stout will play Harry’s best friend, Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton will portray Hermione Granger. Daniel Radcliffe has even shared his excitement about the young actors.

John Lithgow (recently seen as Winston Churchill in The Crown) will seize on the role of Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer (Ozark) will play Professor McGonagall, and Paapa Essiedu will succeed the late Alan Rickman, who passed away in 2016, as Severus Snape. Essiedu, praised for his performance in I May Destroy You (2020), recently revealed in the Sunday Times that he had been the target of racist abuse and death threats.
