Mercedes-Benz is expanding its zero-emission lineup with the debut of the New Mercedes VLE, a vehicle the company says marks the beginning of “a new era” and an ambitious project to expand into the electric vehicle sector.
A Completely New Model
The new Mercedes VLE represents a completely new project for the automaker, being the first vehicle built on the new Van Architecture, a modular, flexible, and scalable platform on which the German company plans to build an entire family of models. This move underscores the growing trend of dedicated EV platforms designed to maximize efficiency and performance.
Mercedes highlights that the new electric van aims to offer the ride comfort and driving dynamics of a limousine, reminiscent of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, while simultaneously providing the space and versatility typical of a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV). The concept was initially presented last year with the Mercedes Vision V.
The VLE will similarly leverage the Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS), promising an immersive and comprehensive infotainment experience, alongside a top-tier technical compartment featuring an 800-volt architecture and high-performance charging capabilities to minimize downtime.
Utilizing charging speeds of up to 300 kW, the VLE can recover up to 355 kilometers (approximately 220 miles) of range (based on the WLTP homologation cycle) in just 15 minutes. The company has confirmed the van will offer an autonomy exceeding 700 kilometers (approximately 435 miles), positioning it at the top of its category and providing a robust technical foundation for a successful model.
The VLE will be available in a version with a single motor producing 203 kW of power, as well as a variant with all-wheel drive capable of reaching 305 kW. A 115 kWh battery pack (nickel‑manganese‑cobalto/NMC chemistry) will be available initially, and will later be joined by an 80 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery for the entry-level version.
The interior will be modular, accommodating up to eight passengers (with various configurations available starting from five seats). Cargo space, depending on the configuration, can reach up to 4,078 liters. The project will also include a comprehensive suite of active safety features, with numerous sensors designed to provide a safe and relaxed driving experience.
Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, commented on the debut of the new model:
“The new, all-electric VLE marks the next pivotal milestone in our 140 years of successful automotive history. Driven by our pioneering spirit, it redefines the concept of space and comfort, introducing a revolutionary level of versatility and innovation. It also offers a top-of-the-category range of over 700 km. The VLE is the first model to be built on the new Van Architecture, designed to meet a wide range of customer needs and adapt to any lifestyle.”
