New Parking Rules Spark Frustration at Migros Dreispitz

Migros Basel is facing customer friction following the implementation of a recent, barrier-free parking system at its Dreispitz location. The transition from physical barriers to an automated digital system has led to billing disputes and consumer confusion, highlighting the operational challenges often associated with upgrading retail infrastructure.

The new regime, managed by the firm Mobility Hub Parkservice, eliminates traditional entry and exit gates. Instead, the system utilizes cameras to scan vehicle license plates upon entry and exit to calculate parking duration. Under this model, customers are required to pay the parking fee before leaving the premises.

The shift has already resulted in financial disputes. One customer, Hanspeter Rieder, reported receiving a bill for 61 CHF from Mobility Hub Parkservice after shopping at the Dreispitz location. Rieder stated that because the barriers were open, he assumed the parking was free, noting that barriers had occasionally been left up during previous maintenance periods. This sentiment is echoed by other users on platforms such as Trustpilot, where the parking management firm has received numerous negative reviews.

Despite these complaints, Migros is maintaining its commitment to the new technology. Prisca Huguenin-dit-Lenoir, head of the Migros media office, stated that the system is being introduced at multiple Migros locations and will continue to be rolled out to additional sites. According to Huguenin-dit-Lenoir, the system has been “generally well perceived” overall.

This operational update comes as the Migros Dreispitz parking rules are integrated into the broader strategy of Genossenschaft Migros Basel (GMBS). As one of ten cooperatives within the Migros-Genossenschafts-Bund (MGB), GMBS is a legally independent entity and the seventh-largest cooperative in the group by revenue.

The financial scale of GMBS underscores the significance of its regional operations. In 2025, the cooperative reported a revenue of 866 million CHF and employed 2,517 staff members. For the 2024 fiscal year, the organization recorded a profit of approximately 33.6 million CHF. The cooperative serves a wide catchment area, including the cantons of Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft, as well as portions of Jura, Bern, and Solothurn.
