Newark Liberty International Airport experienced widespread disruptions Monday, February 23, 2026, as a significant winter storm blanketed the region. More than 82% of departing flights were canceled, leaving travelers stranded and scrambling to adjust their plans.
The airport, a major hub for United Airlines, was described as nearly deserted, with roadways leading to the terminals largely impassable. The severe weather is impacting travel across the region, and the cancellations at Newark underscore the storm’s reach.
Gloria Evans, 80, recounted difficulties reaching the airport for a 9:20 a.m. Spirit Airlines flight to Los Angeles, falling twice in the snow. Her flight has since been canceled.
“I’m in shock. I don’t know what to do,” Evans told CNN.
Johan Fraser is attempting to travel from Iowa to South Africa, but is now stuck at Newark Airport, with his travel delayed until at least Tuesday. He described a scene of many travelers seeking shelter within the terminal.
“When I arrived this morning I saw a lot of people sleeping here,” Fraser noted.
June Conklin also spent Sunday night at the airport after her flight to Florida was grounded.
“We boarded the plane, but they decided to cancel it and, by the time they did, the winds had intensified,” Conklin said. “We’ll get there somehow.”
Roads leading to the terminal are covered in snow, and whiteout conditions have severely limited visibility for drivers.
Hotel shuttle buses are not operating, and many nearby parking lots remain unplowed, forcing those attempting to leave to dig out their vehicles.
An airport food court worker said they spent the night at the airport and are awaiting relief from the day shift, who stayed at a nearby hotel.
As United Airlines adds new routes at Newark, the current weather situation presents a significant challenge to travelers and airport operations.
