Nicholas Brendon, best known for his role as Xander Harris on the iconic series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” has died, his family announced Friday. He was 54 years old. Brendon also appeared as Kevin Lynch on the CBS drama “Criminal Minds.”

In a statement, his family shared, “We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon. He passed in his sleep of natural causes. Most people know Nicky for his operate as an actor and for the characters he brought to life over the years. In recent years Nicky has found his passion in painting and art. Nicky loved to share his enthusiastic talent with his family, friends and fans. He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create. Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was. While it’s no secret that Nicholas had struggles in the past, he was on medications and treatment to manage his diagnosis and he was optimistic about the future at the time of his passing. Our family asks for privacy during this time as we grieve his loss and celebrate the life of a man who lived with intensity, imagination, and heart. Thank you to everyone who has shown love and support.”

Brendon captivated audiences as Xander Harris, one of Buffy’s (Sarah Michelle Gellar) closest friends and a key member of the Scooby Gang, providing both comedic relief and unwavering loyalty throughout the show’s seven-season run. The role cemented his place in pop culture and launched a career that included appearances in films like “Demon Island,” “Unholy,” and “Psycho Beach Party” alongside Amy Adams and Lauren Ambrose.

Following the conclusion of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” in 2003, Brendon publicly battled addiction and mental health challenges, announcing his intention to seek treatment for alcoholism at a 2004 fan convention.

He continued to work, appearing in 21 episodes of “Criminal Minds” as former hacker Kevin Lynch. However, his personal struggles became increasingly public, leading to numerous arrests beginning in 2010. He faced multiple arrests in 2015, even appearing on “Dr. Phil” before walking off the show. Further legal issues followed, including a 2015 arrest in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., for allegedly strangling his girlfriend, resulting in a guilty plea and another stint in rehabilitation. Additional arrests occurred in 2017 and 2021, related to assault and prescription fraud, respectively.

In recent years, Brendon maintained a presence on social media, sharing updates on his life, health, and artwork with fans. In a 2023 Instagram post, he revealed he had undergone two spinal surgeries and suffered a heart attack in 2022, and openly discussed the financial strain of medical expenses.

Just weeks before his death, on March 14, Hulu announced it would not be moving forward with a planned revival of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” a project that would have seen Sarah Michelle Gellar reprise her iconic role. While Brendon had publicly expressed his disappointment at being excluded from the potential reboot, criticizing Gellar in a Facebook livestream, the news underscored the enduring legacy of the series and its impact on a generation of viewers.

Born Nicholas Brendon Schultz on April 12, 1971, in Los Angeles, he began acting to help overcome a stutter. He is survived by his twin brother, Kelly Donovan. He was married and divorced twice.
