Niger health officials reported 17,406 cases of tuberculosis in 2025, including 13,607 new cases of pulmonary tuberculosis, the most contagious form of the disease, according to a statement released Monday by Niger’s Minister of Health, Colonel-Major Garba Hakimi.
The country has established a national multisectoral accountability framework for tuberculosis control, with a focus on strengthening efforts to reach those affected by the disease. As a result of these initiatives, screening coverage has increased from 60% in 2021 to 87% in 2025, the minister noted in a radio-television address marking World Tuberculosis Day, observed annually on March 24.
This year’s observance, themed “Yes, You can end TB through country-led responses with community contribution,” provides an opportunity “to raise public awareness of the health, social and economic consequences of tuberculosis, and to intensify efforts to end this global epidemic,” Hakimi added.
According to the World Health Organization, tuberculosis remains the world’s deadliest infectious disease, infecting nearly 10.7 million people and causing more than 1.23 million deaths in 2024.
