Nintendo has released a significant software update, version 22.0.0, for both the Nintendo Switch and the newer Nintendo Switch 2 consoles. The update, which rolled out on March 16, 2026, introduces new social features and system improvements, enhancing the overall user experience.

A key component of the update is an “Enhanced Portable Mode” for the Nintendo Switch 2, designed to optimize performance when playing games on the go. According to reports, this mode provides a performance boost for original Nintendo Switch titles when played on the new hardware. This enhancement allows players to enjoy their existing game libraries with improved visuals and responsiveness.

The update similarly includes improvements to the Nintendo Switch App, which has been updated to version 3.3.0. The Nintendo Switch App facilitates various functions, including managing game downloads and accessing online services.

Nintendo is also refining its social features with the introduction of GameChat. Until March 31, 2026, GameChat will be accessible without a Nintendo Switch Online membership, allowing players to voice chat, share screens, and even video chat using a compatible USB-C camera (sold separately). After this period, a Nintendo Switch Online subscription will be required to utilize GameChat. The system features noise-cancelling technology for clearer communication.

The update further expands the system’s audio capabilities with the addition of a Mario and Luigi-themed track to the console’s music catalog. This addition provides a customizable audio experience for users.

The Nintendo Switch 2, released in most regions on June 5, 2025, continues to receive ongoing support and enhancements. The console, which boasts a 7.9-inch LCD screen and is powered by a custom Nvidia Tegra T239 processor, currently has sold 17.37 million units as of December 31, 2025. The Nintendo Switch 2 is available as a standalone console for $449.99 MSRP, or bundled with Mario Kart World for $499.99 MSRP. The console’s ability to seamlessly transition between TV, tabletop, and handheld modes continues to be a key differentiator in the gaming market.
