The U.S.new car market is undergoing a significant shift as affordability continues to decline. Nissan’s decision to discontinue the Versa-previously the country’s least expensive new vehicle-marks the latest in a series of automakers scaling back offerings in the entry-level segment amid rising production costs and a consumer preference for larger vehicles. This trend leaves budget-conscious buyers with increasingly limited options, as manufacturers prioritize more profitable models.

Rising production costs and shifting consumer preferences are prompting automakers to reassess their strategies, particularly impacting entry-level models.

Nissan announced it will discontinue production of the Versa by year-end, effectively ending the availability of a new vehicle in the U.S. market with a starting price below $20,000. This follows a similar move by Mitsubishi with its Mirage, further shrinking options in this segment.

The company stated its intention to allocate resources to more profitable areas, focusing on mid-range sedans like the Sentra and Altima, as well as compact SUVs such as the Kicks. Nissan’s new entry-level offering will be the Kicks Play, priced at $22,910.

THE MOST AFFORDABLE NEW CAR

With the Versa’s departure, the title of “most affordable new car” now belongs to the 2026 Hyundai Venue (SUV), starting at $22,150. In the sedan category, the Kia K4 emerges as the most budget-friendly option at $23,385.

Industry experts observe a trend of manufacturers moving away from low-margin, entry-level vehicles, instead prioritizing investments in more lucrative segments like SUVs and electric models. This shift reflects a broader industry focus on maximizing profitability amid economic pressures.

As a result, new car prices in the U.S. generally remain above the $22,000-$25,000 range, limiting choices for budget-conscious buyers.

Current lowest-priced models available in the U.S. market include:

  • Hyundai Venue (SUV): $22,150 (949.043,33 TL)

  • Nissan Kicks Play (SUV): $22,910 (981.606,44 TL)

  • Kia K4 (Sedan): $23,385 (1.001.958,39 TL)
