Multiple Protests Planned Across Los Angeles Area Today
Demonstrations are scheduled throughout the greater Los Angeles area today, October 18, as part of a nationwide wave of protests organized against perceived authoritarian trends.
Organizers have mapped out over 80 actions across Los Angeles County, ranging from large rallies to smaller picket lines and educational events. A flagship protest is planned for 2pm to 5:30pm at Gloria Molina Grand Park in downtown Los Angeles, but numerous other locations will host demonstrations. These include Unidad Park in Historic Filipinotown (10am-noon), Los Angeles City Hall (10am-2pm), Pasadena’s Lake Avenue and Colorado Boulevard (2pm-4pm), and Huntington Beach Pier (noon-2pm). A full list of locations can be found here.
The protests, dubbed “No Kings,” aim to demonstrate opposition to what organizers describe as creeping authoritarianism. “What this is about is everybody coming together and demonstrating—we don’t do kings in America,” Indivisible’s executive director Ezra Levin told MSNBC. Authorities are preparing for potential clashes, remembering the events of June when demonstrations near federal buildings escalated and resulted in the use of tear gas and flash bangs. These protests follow a period of heightened political polarization and concern over democratic norms.
Officials have pledged increased law enforcement presence throughout the region, with extra patrols planned by city and county agencies. Participants are advised to arrive early, stay informed about potential route changes, bring water and sun protection, and remain with trusted groups. For information on protest safety and legal rights, resources are available from the American Civil Liberties Union.
City and county agencies will continue to monitor the situation and respond as needed throughout the day.
