Hello Games has introduced a massive expansion to No Man’s Sky with the launch of the Xeno Arena update on April 8, 2026, effectively integrating a creature-collection and battling system into its vast universe. The update allows players to capture, train, and pit alien creatures against one another, adding a competitive multiplayer layer to the exploratory space sim as it approaches its 10th anniversary.

A Fresh Dimension of Galactic Exploration

The Xeno Arena update transforms how players interact with the procedurally generated wildlife of the galaxy. Every species now possesses unique elemental affinities determined by its home world and xeno species. According to Hello Games, this system encourages deeper exploration, as rarer biomes yield more powerful creatures that are significantly more hard to defeat in combat.

Players can also encounter “extraordinarily rare” legendary variants characterized by exceptional stats. Once a creature is added to a squad, Travellers can enhance its abilities through bonding, feeding, and sparring. To further customize their teams, the update introduces the ability to breed and genetically modify creatures to create unique colors and variants.

Competitive Battling and Holo-Arenas

The centerpiece of the update is the introduction of holo-arenas, which can be found at Nexus points and Space Stations. These arenas serve as the primary hub for multiplayer competition, where players can battle their pets against friends, strangers, and NPCs. Hello Games stated that the feature provides a “genuine path for players to progress in the game,” featuring daily challenges that offer ultimate rewards.

The developer noted that the Xeno Arena was directly inspired by the pet-battling mechanics found in World of Warcraft, as well as Pokémon and Palworld. By blending these elements, the update signals a shift toward more complex progression systems and increased multiplayer engagement within the title.

This evolution of gameplay allows players to discover specific abilities—such as a powerful neutron blast attack from a robotic creature—turning rare discoveries into competitive assets.
