An explosion struck the entrance of the U.S. Embassy’s consular section in Oslo, Norway, early Sunday morning, though no injuries have been reported, according to police.
The incident, which occurred around 1 a.m. Local time on March 8, 2026, prompted a large police response and an ongoing investigation. The blast’s cause remains unknown, but authorities believe it was a deliberate act.
Police incident commander Michael Dellemyr told public broadcaster NRK, “At around 1 a.m. We received several reports of an explosion. We arrived shortly afterwards and confirmed that there had been an explosion that hit the US embassy.”
Dellemyr also stated, “The damage is minor.” He added that investigators were withholding specific details about the nature of the damage and the explosive device, if any, “because the investigation is in its early stages.”
Speaking to TV2, Dellemyr indicated that police “have an idea of the cause,” but remained circumspect, saying, “It appears to us that this is an act carried out by someone.”
A bomb squad was dispatched to the scene, and investigators are interviewing witnesses. A significant portion of the surrounding area was cordoned off, with police stopping vehicles in the vicinity, local media reported.
A 16-year-vintage resident, identified only as Edvard, told TV2 he initially thought the blast originated from his home. “My mother and I first thought it came from our house so we looked around a little, but then we saw the flashing lights outside the window and a ton of police,” he said. He also described seeing police dogs, drones, and helicopters at the scene.
Police confirmed they are in contact with the U.S. Embassy and are continuing to investigate. The incident comes amid heightened security concerns globally, and the investigation will likely draw international attention.
